Union Gap City Government Change Question (November 2012)
This measure seeks to change the current city government from the current strong mayor form to a city manager form. The issue was brought to the ballot through a successful petition drive by residents who were unhappy with the current mayor. The new form of government would have the city run by seven commissioners who would choose a manager to run the government. Proponents of the new form of government have stated that the current Mayor has made a mess of the city's finances and a professional manager would do better to ensure things are run more smoothly.

|“|| Should the City of Union Gap abandon its current mayor-council form of government and reorganize under a council-manager form of government?
Dan Vanover, Dave Butler, and Dan Olson, all members of the committee in favor and supporters of this charter amendment, argue that the current form of government does not ensure a qualified leader of the Cit of Union Gap and that as the chief executive officer must oversee over fifty employees and a greater than $20 budget a professional manager selected by the Council is better than an elected Mayor.
Mike Moore, Dave Matson, and Debra Moore, members of the committee against and opponents of this charter amendment, argue that changing the form of government of Union City to put the management of the city in the hands of an appointed manager puts decisions in the hands of someone who is not accountable to the voters and, therefore, less tied to the good of the voter in his decision making.
