Gillnet Measure

Dear BaileyL,

The article "Oregon Gillnet Ban (2010)" is neither fair nor balanced from an Oregon resident and seafood consumer's point of view. It seems to proceed from several assumptions: that banning the Columbia River gillnet fishery is necesarry or desirable; that the Coastal Conservation Association's motives in filing this ballot petition were straightforward and honorable; and that the Attorney General of Oregon erred in amending the draft ballot title in the manner in which he did for the certified ballot title. Those are decidedly biased assumptions.

The article also contains significant errors and ommissions, first among them is that after stating "The draft ballot title read:" you cite the certified ballot title rather than the draft ballot title. The draft ballot title as published on the Oregon Secretary of State's website is not represented in the article at all.

I propose to amend this article by doing the following:

Adding a section on the Initiative process under Oregon law
Citing the draft ballot title accurately
Adding a section on comments received by the Secretary of State during the public comment period
Adding another section to cite the certified ballot title
More accurately and fully representing the ballot petition's opponents

I believe all of these would add objectivity to the article. Aino Nymuos

Virginia Personhood Amendment (2012)

You and AlejandroOrtiz might want to rework this article -- the Virginia personhood effort is purely legislative, not a legislatively-referred constitutional amendment. If passed by the Legislature, it will become law without the need for a popular vote. Note that the text of the bill mentions "be it enacted", rather than discussing it as being placed on the ballot for vote, as the Wisconsin Personhood Amendment (2014) does.

I don't know if you want to kill this article off entirely, since it's not an amendment, or rework it to make it clear that it's legislation. However, the current version is not factually correct.

List of ballot measures by topic

I was looking at List of ballot measures by topic and thinking that what's missing is Background information aka External links. Wikipedia, search engines and general directories aren't generally useful for controversial subjects, so I was thinking we might be able to contribute something important here. I don't want to include personal blogs and local advocacy groups, just important, serious sources. For example, LibGuides from universities, legal guides such as Lexis-Nexis, journalist guides, think tanks, and collected news coverage on the topic from the major sources. I went through the orange tabs at this University of Illinois site and found some useful links I hadn't seen elsewhere. Also the Johns Hopkins Center. btw - I see you're in Chicago, as I am. Are there any other Chicagoans here? Just curious, as I had assumed you were all in DC. TomJx 11:45, 5 January 2013 (CST)

Submit a link and Submit a leg link

The problem with these templates is that they were written to create a separate column on the right for the entirety of the section. If there's only one column following, the only effect is to cause 'early wrapping' of long lines. For our tests of two and three column formatting, it distorts the effect because it doesn't allow the columns to use the full width of the page. Obviously I didn't want to change the templates themselves with no discussion, so I substituted hard-coding for one instance, and putting it at the bottom for the other. The latter option means it floats over any following sections, such as the empty References section in Minimum wage on the ballot, so that was a problem. My personal preference would be to see those boxes on the left, directly below the existing links. The more whitespace between the left and right, the less likely the reader is to notice the box on the right. I think it's also a more natural progression that the reader first sees the links provided, and then considers what might be added. The box's height isn't enough to justify using the float option, imo. TomJx

Thank you for your reply. I merged and moved our discussion on these to Template Talk:Submit a link and Template Talk:Submit a leg link. I'm not sure if your comment on two columns referred to Issues on the Ballot or LegisLinks. The former has never been more than two columns, as the link lengths will vary. The latter is waiting on Geoff, as he said he wanted to show the formatting to his team that week. That was more than three weeks ago, and as there has been no subsequent discussion at Template Talk:LegisLinks, it appears no one is interested. TomJx 10:53, 3 April 2013 (CDT)

Twitter

I don't know who's in charge on social media for Ballotpedia, but as long as I'm talking to you.... ;-) The BP logo unfortunately evokes nothing so much as British Petroleum. That doesn't matter on the main website, because the reader presumably knows where he is, but it can be an issue on Twitter. I'd change the colors to American flag blue and red for the letters, and add a background of a map of the continental U.S. That would immediately stop the reader's mind from thinking British Petroleum. The bigger problem is how Ballotpedia is using Twitter, which seems to be limited to issuing tweets to followers - and the recent #WDWTU. TomJx 09:52, 14 March 2013 (CDT)

Without interaction, there's no attraction of new followers. First, follow all the journalists and bloggers covering the relevant topics. Second, make sure they're acquainted with Ballotpedia so they consider using it as a source or reference - keep track of whether or not each is following BP. Third, when they tweet about something for which BP has something useful, do a reply tweet linking to the relevant page so their followers can see it. That's how you attract new followers from the universe of those who have already shown their interest in the topics. Hashtags are another option, but really only useful for something trending - in which case there are so many that cutting through the noise gets us back to the importance of the avatar. Example: A popular journalist tweets about his new article about some state ballot measure relating to immigration. The article allows reader comments. BP might reply-tweet and also comment at the article, mentioning something additional in BP's article on the measure and linking to it, or pointing out similar measures in this or other states to be found at Immigration on the ballot - or current polling, the official government links, or whatever BP provides that would complement the material in the journalist's article. For a more general article, linking to the resources at External links would likely attract some of the journalist's readers - and again you have increased the number of people who are aware of what Ballotpedia offers. The idea is for people to second screen us on these topics, just as they currently use Google and Wikipedia as they read a news article, tweet or Facebook post.. TomJx 13:40, 14 March 2013 (CDT)

Analysis section

Bailey, I should clarify this situation so you don't feel I'm leaving you hanging. I have no interest in this section per se. As I explained to Sarah, I was trying to follow the existing Writing guidelines. I had no way of knowing the Intro sentence was being replaced by a heretofore-unknown Intro paragraph. If the ideology (as GovTrack calls it) wasn't supposed to be in the Intro, according to the Guidelines, then the obvious place was Analysis - so I moved it while I was updating the CongLinks of some profiles. I copied one of the existing Guideline pages for that section and changed the appropriate wording for the sake of consistency. It seemed to appear in every article, but it had no mention in the Guidelines at all. It was originally added last May, and I thought it odd it remained in the Intro section after the Analysis section was added last October, and based on the Guidelines I assumed that was an oversight. I've noticed other minor discrepancies in article formats among members of Congress, which is understandable over time. At any rate, there's certainly no way I can be expected to make suggestions to a team I'm not part of about changes I don't know about. I did stumble across May's Project of the Month today, which gave me a good laugh. TomJx 14:10, 20 May 2013 (CDT)
