Vermont Senate Judiciary Committee proposes changes in drug policy
By Katy Farrell
MONTPELIER, Vermont: The Vermont Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday voted in favor of allowing law enforcement access to reports from the Department of Health's statewide database of prescription drugs. Gov. Peter Shumlin hoped that the legislature would allow police direct access to the database, and the resulting measure is viewed as a compromise. One state Senator raised concern over setting a precedent for warrant-less access.
Another aspect added to the measure was a reduction of penalties for the possession of less an one ounce of marijuana.
The Senate Judiciary Committee's stance on this law varies from that of the Vermont House of Representatives and will require further compromise if adopted and passed by the full Senate.
