Washington's filed measures grow in Ballotpedia's monthly initiative count
By Al Ortiz
Another month has passed in 2010, and Ballotpedia's count of filed initiatives has grown yet again, although it was not a big increase as it has been in the last few months. However, one similar pattern that seems to be apparent is the steady number of filed initiatives that keep coming in the state of Washington. According to the official count of initiatives filed in the past month, twenty-two new initiatives were filed in five states, with 16 filed in Washington alone. In total, the count from last month rose from 571 to 593.
In related news, Arizona saw an initiative certified for the ballot, as the Arizona Secretary of State verified a medical marijuana proposal's petition signatures. The measure would allow residents in the state with specific medical conditions to be treated with certain amounts of marijuana for personal use. Arizona's petition drive deadline is July 1, 2010.
In the month of May, there were five petition drive deadlines of some kind that passed, and in this month, June will see deadlines arrive for four states. On June 15, 2010, Nevada and North Dakota will have their petition drive deadlines, while petition organizers in Montana have a deadline of June 18, 2010 to turn in their petition signatures. Finally, Ohio's deadline will arrive on June 30, 2010.
The next official count by Ballopedia of filed initiatives will be on July 1, 2010. Initiatives that Ballotpedia includes in its count include initiatives that were withdrawn or abandoned after they were filed, initiatives that failed to qualify for the ballot because they missed a petition drive deadline, initiatives that were filed in states with a rolling petition deadline that might still qualify for the 2011 ballot or 2012 ballot, multiple versions of what appears to basically be the same initiative, and initiatives that have already qualified for a 2010 ballot.
Ballotpedia's count of filed initiatives does not count ballot measures proposed by a state legislature and initiatives that groups have said they are going to file, but have not actually filed.
