There was not a Washington County Burning Elimination measure on the May 11 ballot in Washington County.

This measure was not on the ballot.

This measure sought to eliminate the two week period of allowed burning of yard waste by residents. The state banned burning of waste in 1980 but allowed local governments to allowed short periods in the year for burning if they wanted the option. Now there is a collection of yard waste that is held so the option of burning is not needed for residents to dispose of their unwanted yard waste. The chief of the volunteer fire department in Blair, a city in the county, noted that a halt to the burns would be appreciated because false alarms and smoke issues cause a lot of calls that are unnecessary.[1]
