Amendments

The Washington Public Employees' Extra Compensation Amendment, also known as Senate Joint Resolution 18, was on the November 4, 1958 ballot in Washington as a legislatively-referred constitutional amendment, where it was approved. The measure prohibited the legislature from granting extra compensation to any public employee after the services have been rendered or contract entered into. Additionally, the measure clarified that this does not prevent pension increases.[1] The measure amended Section 25 of Article II of the Washington Constitution.[2]

PENSIONS AND EMPLOYEES' EXTRA COMPENSATION

Shall Article II, Section 25 of the state constitution be amended to prohibit the legislature from granting any extra compensation to any public employee after the services have been rendered or the contract entered into and to provide that Article II, Section 25 shall not be deemed to prevent increases in pensions after such pensions have been granted?[3]
