Wichita Public Schools is a school district in Kansas that served 49,389 students during the 2011-2012 school year.[2] This district is the largest by enrollment in the state of Kansas.

Wichita Public Schools is located in Sedgwick County, Kan.
Wichita Public Schools is based in Wichita, the county seat of Sedgwick County, in south-central Kansas. The county was home to an estimated 505,415 residents in 2013, according to the United States Census Bureau.[3]

Demographics

Sedgwick County underperformed in comparison to the rest of Kansas in terms of higher education achievement, median household income and poverty rate in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 28.7 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 30.3 percent for Kansas as a whole. The median household income in Sedgwick County was $49,865 compared to $51,332 for the state of Kansas. The poverty rate in was 15.3 percent in the county compared to 13.7 percent for the entire state.[3]

Superintendent

The superintendent of Wichita Public Schools is John Allison. He has served in this role since 2009. Allison previously served as superintendent of the Mt. Lebanon School District in Pennsylvania and deputy superintendent of Grapevine-Colleyville ISD in Texas. Allison earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Kansas and master's degree from Emporia State University, completing doctoral work in educational leadership at St. Louis University.[7]
