Thompson earned his BA from Northern State University in 1967. He went on to receive his MA from the University of Kansas in 1973.
Thompson was an Assistant Instructor/Research Assistant for the University of Kansas from 1970 to 1974. He then worked as a University Associate in Rhetoric at the University of Illinois from 1980 to 1981. From 1990 to 1991, he was an Independent Scholar for National Endowment for the Humanities. He also worked as a Teacher at Sioux Falls Lincoln High from 1968 to 1970 and from 1974 to 2001. Thompson and his wife, Anne, have two children.
