Worried horse track owners may mount veto petition drive in Ohio
COLUMBUS, Ohio: Horse track owners in Ohio have let it be known that they may mount a petition drive during the summer of 2010 to force a veto referendum vote on recently-enacted Ohio House Bill 519.
Ohio House Bill 519 was signed into law by Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland on June 10, 2010 following approval of the bill by the Ohio State Legislature. HB 519 contains "implementing provisions" for Ohio Casino Initiative, Issue 3 (2009). Issue 3, approved by 52.9% of the state's voters on November 3, 2009, authorizes the building of one casino each in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, and Toledo.
Horse track owners in Ohio object to the newly-approved legislation because they believe it will harm attendance at the state's horse tracks, since HB 519 and Issue 3 don't allow slots at horse tracks.
