Yuma City Charter Amendment (May 2010)
This measure was approved
- YES 6,933 (73.57%)
- NO 2,491 (26.43%)
This measure asked voters to repeal previous language in the charter that gave local preference to contractors and would also add new language in regard to this. Local contractors wanted this measure because they wanted the ability to have preference in the community so that jobs could be kept in the community and would better provide for the city. The Associated General Contractors, a group which represents contractors throughout the state, has come out against this measure saying that it is unconstitutional to give preference noting a previous court case in the state which gave the ruling that preferences harm and create more burden rather than help. By limiting competition, the taxpayers will end up paying more for work.
