The ACLU sent a letter to the New Mexico Attorney General, seeking a criminal investigation of the Bernalillo County Clerk's office. They are concerned the Clerk's office may have released confidential voter registration information to the Republican Party, who then publicly distributed it in violation of voter privacy laws[1]

Info to GOP

In a press packet about voter registration fraud recently distributed by the GOP, photocopies of 19 voter registration forms appear. Several of the forms have handwritten notes in a section reserved for "office use only," leading to the possibility they had been reviewed by County officials before the GOP got a hold of them.

According to New Mexico state law, the County Clerk can only release voter registration to registrants. It also charges a forth degree felony for any "person who unlawfully copies, conveys, or uses information from a certificate of registration."[1]

Privacy Concerns

The photocopies released by the GOP had Social Security Numbers blacked out, but names, addresses, phone numbers, and in some cases birth dates, were all legible.

ACLU Executive Director Peter Simonson stated, "We still do not know how the GOP obtained these registration forms, whether they might obtain more, and if someone in the County Clerk's office is sharing the information with other parties. The threat to voters' privacy is imminent."[1]
