John McCain's support of Immigration Reform
John McCain has agreed with ACORN previously on the issue of illegal immigration. McCain has promoted legislation supporting giving illegal aliens residency status, with the goal of citizenship. He also favors the creation of an additional guest worker program with an option for permanent immigration. His prominent role in promoting the Senate's 2006 immigration legislation, including an initial co-sponsorhip role with Ted Kennedy, made him a focus of the debate in 2006. His support for Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007 did so again in 2007.
The immigration issue caused intense friction within his own party. The Washington Times reported that McCain and South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham "first checked with Mr. Kennedy before deciding to vote with the Massachusetts Democrat on an amendment to the Senate bill."[1] McCain's immigration stance was widely cited as a major reason for his presidential campaign's difficulty during most of 2007.
John McCain's 2006 address to ACORN rally
On Feb. 20, 2006 McCain addressed a group of immigration reform leaders as the keynote speaker at an ACORN-sponsored immigration reform rally in Miami Florida.[2] In his speech, he told immigration rights activists that they "are what makes America special." ACORN co-sponsored the rally along with ACORN affiliate SEIU and the local Catholic archdiocese and ACORN volunteers surrounded McCain on stage.
While there's no evidence that McCain ever formally teamed with the ACORN, at the time of the event he did not object to being affiliated with ACORN.[3] McCain appears on the official press release from Miami-Dade College and is listed as the keynote speaker. [4]
