Lobbying priorities

Prudent education budgeting: The AASB is committed to supporting a data based limit for annual appropriations, curtailing dependence on borrowed funds, and discouraging use of windfall gains in the Education Trust Fund for recurring needs.[2]

Increasing student achievement and graduation rates: The AASB is dedicated to expanding pre-K opportunities and increasing the mandatory school age to 17.[2]

Opposing school start date efforts: The AASB is opposed to there being a mandatory start date for all Alabama public schools. The AASB maintains that school start dates should be a local issue rather than a statewide issue.[2]

Supporting local policies that provide for school board training: The AASB is committed to lobbying for mandatory school board member orientation. The AASB supports this policy because it will allow school board members to better understand local policy, education "lingo," and educational fiscal management procedures.[2]

Prohibiting unfunded mandates: The AASB is dedicated to protecting boards of education from unfunded mandates, including local fiscal notes on all pieces of legislation, the elimination of underfunding local K-12 needs - chiefly facility maintenance and operations (OCE) and student transportation.[2]
