Alabama Democratic party chair claims GOP leadership violated campaign finance laws
July 31, 2011
MONTGOMERY, Alabama: Democratic party chairman Mark Kennedy accused Republican leadership of violating campaign finance laws with illegal transfers between two political action committees. Transfers between PACs were banned after House Bill 9 went into effect on December 20, 2010.[1]
Kennedy cited a $100,000 personal contribution to the 136 Years PAC made by Senate employee Monica Cooper. Cooper was then reimbursed for the full $100,000 two days later by the New Alabama Leadership PAC. Kennedy also pointed out four other PAC-to-PAC transfers which would also violate the transfer ban.[1]
Senate majority leader Jabo Waggoner, who organized one of the 136 Years PAC, said in a statement, "We will begin working immediately with our finance team and attorneys to identify and return any inappropriate contributions, regardless of size." A spokesman for house speaker Mike Hubbard claimed the transfer between the two PACs was a legal contribution because the 136 Years PAC is not affiliated with the Alabama Republican Party.[1]
