Mission Statement
The mission of the Alabama Legislative Reference Service is to provide the best possible legal service to the Alabama Legislature, the Governor, and other state officers in the limited time available to perform the work[1].
History
The Alabama Legislative Reference Service was created on an act of the Alabama Legislature in 1945[1].
Governance
The Legislative Reference Service is under the supervision of a Executive Director appointed by the Alabama Legislative Council[1].

The following is a list of services offered by the Legislative Reference Service:
Alabama Code
The Legislative Reference Service has a major responsibility over written statutes in the Alabama Code. The Alabama Code is complied on the legislature's request by the Legislative Reference Service. Also, the Legislative Reference Service serves as a commissioner of the Alabama Code and is responsible for all revisions made to the code through legislative action. Also, the Legislative Reference Service prints and publishes the Alabama Code on request of the legislature[1].
Bill drafting
The Legislative Reference Service does all bill drafting for both houses of the Alabama Legislature and renders help to members of the legislature[1].
Legislative research
The Alabama Legislative Reference Service researches Alabama state laws and how federal laws affect the State of Alabama. Also, the Legislative Reference Service answers questions about the proper application of legislative or constitutional law in Alabama[1].
