As of September 2014, five special elections have been scheduled for the Alabama State Legislature in 2013. These elections were called to fill vacancies in Alabama State Senate District 35 and Alabama House of Representatives Districts 11, 74, 97 and 104.

How vacancies are filled

If there is a vacancy in the Alabama Legislature, a special election must be conducted in order to fill the vacant seat. The governor must call for a special election if the vacancy happens before the next scheduled general election and the Legislature is in session.[1][2] The governor has all discretion in setting the date of the election along with the nominating deadlines.[2]

Note: The special election was not held because Democratic nominee Kelly Evans withdrew from the race on April 10 and the Democrats did not certify another nominee by April 10. Republican nominee Randall Shedd, who won the March 26 Republican primary runoff and was the only candidate remaining after Evans withdrew, was sworn in on April 11.[21][22]
