SPRINGFIELD, Illinois: On Monday, June 28, the last day to challenge filed candidate petitions, all statewide minor party and independent petitions were challenged. A total of 32 candidates' petitions are estimated to have been challenged. The challenge includes petitions filed by Libertarian and Constitution party candidates. According to reports by Ballot Access News, the last minute challenge was filed by Sharon Ann Meroni, who also previously objected the independent gubernatorial petition of Scott Lee Cohen.[1] According to a blog post by Meroni, she objects to the petitions on the basis that the candidates are not constitutionally eligible to hold the offices they are running for.[2] Ballot Access News reports that the State Board of Elections must now hold hearings to determine the validity of filed petitions.[1]
