The Arkansas Child Neglect Investigation Reform Initiative is a proposed initiated state statute that may appear on the 2010 ballot in Arkansas.
Dustin McDaniel, the Arkansas Attorney General, rejected the name and ballot title proposed by the initiative's sponsor in July 2009.[1]
Jeremy Peterson, a resident of Fort Smith, is the sponsor of the measure. He intends to re-submit the measure to the attorney general.
Goal of initiative
The ballot initiative would require the Arkansas State Legislature to:
- Provide a clear definition of “best interests of the child."
- Allow authorities to assess a fine, or charge, state Department of Human Services employees, or any mental health professionals, when a child is unnecessarily taken from a home, or parental rights are wrongfully terminated.
- Establish language in state law that promotes "the importance of the familial bond."[1]
