An Aspen City Hydro Plant Project Question was on the November 6, 2012 ballot in the city of Aspen which is in Pitkin County, where it was defeated.
This measure sought to allow voter opinion on if the city should continue the proposed hydro electricity plant which would use water from the Castle and Maroon creeks. The city council had passed an ordinance in December 2011 which rezoned and gave land to the Castle Creek Energy Center which was set to build a new plant with bond money previously approved by voters, but a petition drive by residents collected more than 594 signatures needed to get the issue on to the ballot. Those who headed the petition drive noted that residents did not understand what the bond money was for which they had approved and sought to repeal the ordinance and allow for voter approval of the electricity project. The council has until September to decide on ballot language.
