The Baldwin School District announced on Monday, June 4th that it will ask voters to approve a $22.9 million dollar school bond issue.[1] The Baldwin school district serves the Baldwin City area. The school board will meet on June 23rd to pass forward a resolution that would be approved by the voters in November. Through the discussion of the school board, the bond measure grew from an initial proposal of $22.5 to $22.9 million dollars.

Proposed use of Baldwin bond issue

The proposed $22.9 million dollars will be raised and allocated to specifically fund the following projects:

  1. Brand new 480 student elementary school housing BESPC, 4year old kindergarten, parent & teachers organization and the rainbow experience school
  2. 10,000 square foot performing arts center to hold up to 600 people
  3. Four baseball and softball fields
  4. Practice track and field
  5. New roof and HVAC for Baldwin Junior middle school

Controversy

The dispute arises around the extra costs of the road that will make the new elementary school accessable to existing streets. The street extension will cost an exstimated $1.2 million dollars.[2]
