MADISON, Wisconsin: California had 53 U.S. House seats on the ballot in 2012. A total of 46 incumbents sought re-election on November 6, 2012, with 39 of them being successfully re-elected.

The following incumbents lost in the general election:

District 7 Republican incumbent Dan Lungren was defeated by Ami Bera (D) in the general election.
District 15 Pete Stark (D) was defeated by Eric Swalwell (D) in the general election.
District 30 Howard Berman (D) was defeated by fellow Democratic incumbent Brad Sherman in one of the most heated same-party battles of the year.
District 35 Democratic incumbent Joe Baca was defeated by Gloria Negrete McLeod (D).
District 36 Incumbent Mary Bono Mack (D) was defeated by Democratic challenger Raul Ruiz.
District 44 Laura Richardson (D) was defeated by fellow Democratic incumbent Janice Hahn.
District 52 Incumbent Brian Bilbray (R) was defeated by Scott Peters (D).

As a result of the election, Democrats picked up four U.S. House seats in California.

Both chambers of the United States Congress remain split after the November 6, 2012 election. Democrats increased their majority in the U.S. Senate while cutting into the Republicans majority in the U.S. House. Of the 435 candidates who won election to the U.S. House, 85 of them were challengers, which represents 19.5 percent of U.S. House members. Of those 85, 50 are Democratic and 35 are Republican. A total of 27 incumbents were defeated -- 10 Democratic and 17 Republican.
