After creating stub pages and adding links, our next stage is to add biographical and campaign information to each article. See Ballotpedia:Writing about state legislators for help.

Political history

The introductory paragraph should be expanded to include this information:

  • When was the politician first elected to office?
  • When does the politician's current term in office end?
  • For an example, see Lois Wolk.
  • What political offices did the person hold before they were elected to their current position? See John J. Benoit for an example.

Image or YouTube video

In the upper right corner, insert a YouTube or a still photo of the politician.

  • A video should be sized to 300px as in this example.
  • A video is often preferable since you don't have to search for a open source photo, as you would if you were using a still photo.
  • Videos also give more information about the politician.
  • Find videos by searching on YouTube
  • Look for the most generic (non-controversial) video you can find of the politician, such as the politician giving a speech or making some remarks from the legislative chamber.

Issue positions

From their campaign website and other personal sites, add information on their issue positions.

Committee membership

  • List any committees and subcommittees on which the member sits.
  • Examples:

Sponsored legislation

List any major sponsored or co-sponsored information

Major donors

Using data from Follow the Money, list the top 5 financial donors to the member's most recent campaign. A short sentence of summary - "Teacher and construction unions were the largest donor group." - would be a great idea.

Progress

As you finish a state, mark through it so we'll know you're done!
