Election overview articles
By year
The election overview article serves as a hub for all state executive elections in a particular year - a "scorecard."
The article should include:
- A summary of the year's elections.
- Election dates
- Breakdown by state
- Breakdown by office
- News - specific to state executives
- See also section
- Template
- (Replace with appropriate year) {{2014 state executive election}}
- {{State executive officers}}
- Categories
- (Replace year with appropriate year) Category:State executive official elections, 2011
- (Replace year with appropriate year) Category:2011 elections
(Note: with the exception of the summary and "see also" section, the page should be in header tab format.)
Example:
By state
Unlike the main overview article, this page focuses solely on one state.
The article should include:
- A summary
- Key deadlines (in chart format)
- A tab for primaries and general elections. Each tab should have election results and candidates.
- See also
- External links (state election pages, etc.)
- Templates: {{State executive officers}}, {{2014 state executive election}} (replace with appropriate year), and the relevant state template (for example: {{West Virginia}})
- Categories
Example:
- West Virginia state executive official elections, 2011
- Kentucky state executive official elections, 2011
By office
(NOTE: These pages are not being used after the 2011 elections. For governor, lt. governor, attorney general and secretary of state ONLY)
Articles should include:
- Introductory sentence highlighting the elections
- Primary election section
- General election section

Running for office
Once an incumbent has announced their run for office, the following needs to be updated:
- Introductory sentence
- Add section (if not already present) called "Elections"
- Subsection "2011" (or relevant year)
- Add notations about the campaign here. Including primary and general election results.
- Appropriate election categories (below).
Example:
Running for a new or different office
If a current state executive official is running for a different office, we want to make a note of that using the template {{inc new office}}.
- Depending which office the incumbent is seeking, use the following code, adjusting for the appropriate election year:
- For a current SEO running for a seat in the state House, use:
- {{Inc new office|SEO|State House|2012}}
- For a current SEO running for a seat in the state Senate, use:
- {{Inc new office|SEO|State Senate|2012}}
- For a current SEO running for a seat in the U.S. House, use:
- {{Inc new office|SEO|U.S. House|2012}}
- For a current SEO running for a seat in the U.S. Senate, use:
- {{Inc new office|SEO|U.S. Senate|2012}}
- For a current SEO running for an office not listed above (such as Mayor, County Commissioner, school board, et cetera) use:
- {{Inc new office|SEO|Other|2012}}
Also, if a state executive incumbent is running for a new office, make sure to note that by placing a Y next to the parameter New office= within the {{Seocandidate}} template.
Not running
If the incumbent is NOT running for office, update:
- Introductory sentence (list reason for not running - i.e. term limits, etc.)
- Update election section for that year. List other candidates.
- Once election has concluded, update with former officeholder categories.
