Hubbard ran in the special election for District 59 of the Mississippi House of Representatives. The seat was vacant following Kevin McGee's (R) resignation on November 19, 2012, following his criminal prosecution in an ethics case over public contracts that went to his family's company. McGee agreed to pay a $10,000 fine to resolve the case. A special election was held to fill the vacancy on January 8, 2013. Candidates had until December 10, 2012 to file. Special elections in Mississippi are nonpartisan. Brent Powell won more than 51 percent of the vote to take the seat, avoiding a runoff.[2][3][1][4]
