Dodson ran in the 2011 election for Virginia Senate District 22. He was uncontested in the August 23 primary. Thomas Garrett defeated Brian Bates, Mark Peake, Bryan Rhode, and Claudia Tucker to capture the Republican ticket. Dodson was defeated by Garrett in the general election on November 8, 2011.[1]
Early in the campaign Dodson said the Republican primary was simply a way to determine who would lose to him. The week before the election Dodson stated, “I’m still confident that we can win. About 44 percent of the registered voters in the district are in the Lynchburg area, and I have great name recognition here.”[2]
