Biography
Coate is a Montana native, raised in Forsyth. After graduating from Forsyth High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served four years on active duty and returned to Montana to study history at Eastern Montana College. Coate was commissioned as an officer in the Marine Corps after he graduated from Eastern Montana, and eventually retired from the Corps after earning the rank of Colonel.[2]

Elections
2012
Coate ran as an independent candidate in the 2012 election for Governor of Montana on a ticket with Joni Oja. They faced Republicans Rick Hill and Jon Sonju, Democrats Steve Bullock and John E. Walsh, and Libertarians Ron Vandevender and Marc Mulcahy in the November 6, 2012 general election.[3]
