Mullen ran in the 2012 election for the U.S. House, representing Indiana's 2nd District. Mullen beat Dan Morrison in the Democratic primary and faced Jackie Walorski (R) and Andrew Straw (G) in the November 6 general election.[1] Mullen lost nine out of ten counties in his primary, but won St. Joseph County, the most populous county in the district.[4]

Mullen has faced significant residency challenges, with opponents arguing that Mullen does not reside in the state.[7]
The NRCC produced a video to criticize the fact that Mullen allegedly has not lived in Indiana for 16 years and has 3 homes in the Washington DC area.[8]

Mullen and his wife Suzanne have one daughter, Lilly. [3] Suzanne is a lawyer, working for the Republican party in the US House. She has served as a Minority Counsel and General Counsel on the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee once in the majority in 2011.[10][11]
