Bushweller earned his Associates Degree from Ulster County Community College, he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from Oklahoma City University and his Master of Arts Degree from Stanford University.
Before becoming a state senator, Bushweller was the State Director for U.S. Senator Tom Carper, he was the Secretary of the Delaware Department of Public Safety, the Legislative Liaison for Governor Tom Carper and the Teacher Union Field Representative.

Bushweller ran for re-election in the 2012 election for Delaware State Senate District 17. Bushweller ran unopposed in the Democratic primary on September 11, 2012 and was unchallenged in the general election on November 6, 2012. [2][3]

On November 4, 2008, Bushweller won election to the Delaware State Senate from Delaware's 17th Senate District. Bushweller defeated James Hutchison (R) to win the election. Bushweller received 10,279 votes while Hutchison received 7,923 votes.[4] Bushweller raised $97,214 for his campaign in 2008; Hutchison raised $92,562.[5]
