Berend ran for Washington Commissioner of Insurance in 2012. He faces incumbent Mike Kreidler, Scott Reilly (R) and John R. Adams (R) in the blanket primary on August 7.[1] Berend did not advance to the general election.[2]

Campaign themes
In announcing his campaign, Berend stated, “The entire purpose of the office is to regulate insurance. And my vision of the insurance commissioner’s office is to bring it back to the independent, executive position it was meant to be, focusing on, protecting and educating the people of this state about all kinds of insurance."[3]
