Hetrick was born and raised in Weirton, West Virginia. He attended Catholic grade and high schools in Weirton before pursuing his degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Dayton. After he earned his B.S. in 1996, he began his career at General Motors with the Saturn Corporation in Spring Hill, Tennessee. He then moved to Wilmington, Delaware, to work at another GM assembly plant. In 2000, he moved to Michigan. In 2005, he obtained his master's degree in Engineering from Purdue University through GM's Technical Education Program. He moved to Brighton when he accepted an assignment at the Lansing Grand River assembly plant in 2007. He currently works at the General Motors Proving Ground in Milford, MI.

Hetrick ran in the 2012 election for the U.S. House to represent Michigan's 8th District. He was defeated by incumbent Mike Rogers in the August 7 Republican primary.
