Mayor Sepi Richardson, Mayor Pro Tem Clarke Conway, and Brisbane City Council members Michael G. Barnes and Cyril G. Bologoff signed the official ballot argument urging a "yes" vote on the higher tax.

Opponents

John P. Henry and Raymond Nowak of the Radisson Hotel Brisbane, Gina Merz and Manny Mateo of Homewood Suites Brisbane, and George Hawawini of the Mangiare and Xebec Restaurants in Brisbane signed the official ballot argument urging a "no" vote on the higher tax. They believe that hotel occupancy will decline in Brisbane if visitors have to pay a higher tax to stay in the city, and that this will result in an overall loss of tax revenues to the city at a time when the city is having a hard time balancing its budget.

Path to the ballot

The Brisbane City Council approved the tax increase, and putting the tax increase on the ballot. By state law, a minimum of 2/3rds of the City Council had to vote in favor of the tax increase before it could go on the ballot.
