Nelson currently serves as President of Nelson's Insurance Services, and is the former President of Nelson's Florida Roses.

Nelson ran for re-election to the 38th District seat in 2010. He did not have any opposition in the August 24 primary. The general election took place on November 2, 2010. Nelson defeated James Heinzelman, who ran for the seat on the Florida Tea Party ticket.[3]

2008
On November 4, 2008, Nelson won re-election to the Florida House of Representatives from Florida's 38th District, defeating Lonnie Thompson (D) and Lawrence Fisher (NPA). Nelson received 33,889 votes in the election while Thompson received 27,302 votes, and Fisher received 1,595 votes.[4] Nelson raised $218,808 for his campaign; Thompson raised $15,858, and Fisher raised $1,365.[5]
