Campaign related lawsuit

Newton filed a defamation lawsuit against Swindell related to campaign mailers authorized by Swindell and paid for by the N.C. Democratic Party. Newton said Swindell and the NCDP libeled him in the mailer, which stated Newton was arrested and charged with several drug charges including selling cocaine.[9] However, court records show the charges were dropped, because it was a case of mistaken identity.
