California's 36th congressional district is located in the southeastern portion of the state and includes most of Riverside County.[1]
California's 36th congressional district previously was based in Los Angeles County. The district covered most of the coastal communities of Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Torrance, El Segundo, Venice, Wilmington, and San Pedro in Greater Los Angeles.[2]
The current representative of the 36th congressional district is Raul Ruiz (D).

According to a Washington Post article in December 2012, incumbent Raul Ruiz (D) is one of the 10 most vulnerable incumbents in 2014.[3]

According to a Cook Political Report analysis, the 36th district was one of 13 congressional districts in California that may be competitive in 2012. The analysis rated it as Likely Republican.[4] Democrat Raul Ruiz won election in the district.[5]

On November 7, 2000, Jane Harman won election to the United States House. She defeated Steven Kuykendall (R), Daniel Sherman (L), John Konopka (Reform), and Matt Ornati (Natural Law) in the general election.[11]

On November 3, 1998, Steven Kuykendall won election to the United States House. He defeated Janice Hahn (D), Robin Barrett (G), Kerry Welsh (L), and John Konopka (Reform) in the general election.[12]

On November 5, 1996, Jane Harman won re-election to the United States House. She defeated Susan Brooks (R), Bruce Dovner (L), and Bradley McManus (Natural Law) in the general election.[13]

On November 8, 1994, Jane Harman won re-election to the United States House. She defeated Susan Brooks (R), Jack Tyler (L), and Joseph Fields (American Independent) in the general election.[14]
