California Proposition 159 (1992)

California Proposition 159 was on the November 3, 1992 ballot in California as a legislatively-referred constitutional amendment, where it was defeated.
Proposition 159 would have amended Article IV of the California Constitution to add a Section 23 and Section 4 of Article VII of the California Constitution to establish an Office of the Auditor General. The office of Auditor General would have been required to:
- Conduct independent, nonpartisan, professional audits, as required by state or federal law or as requested by the Legislature.
- Hire and promote staff on the basis of merit and professional qualifications.

The fiscal estimate provided by the California Legislative Analyst's Office said:
- Potential state costs and savings from expanded audit activity. Net impact is unknown, but probably not significant.
Path to ballot
The California State Legislature voted to put Proposition 159 on the ballot in Senate Constitutional Amendment 34 (Statutes of 1992, Resolution Chapter 8).
