A California Referendum on AB 1236, the Prohibition on Use of E-Verify Act (#11-0055) failed to qualify for the state's 2012 ballot.

11-0055 was an attempt to use California's veto referendum process to overturn AB 1236.

Ballot title:

Referendum to Overturn Law That Prohibits the Required Use of Federal Electronic Employment-Verification Systems.

Official summary:

"If signed by the required number of registered voters and filed with the Secretary of State, this petition will place on the statewide ballot a challenge to a state law previously approved by the Legislature and Governor. The law must then be approved by a majority of voters at the next statewide election to go into effect. The law prohibits state and local governments from requiring private employers to use federal electronic employment verification systems to verify their employees are authorized to work in United States."

To qualify for the ballot, sponsors of 11-0055 would have had to collect 504,760 signatures by January 7, 2012.

The letter requesting a title and summary for the proposed referendum was signed by Rick Oltman, and was received by the Attorney General of California on October 18, 2011.
