California voters say they were tricked into registering as Republicans

Californians, fooled by petition scam, unknowingly changed their registration. A firm hired by the California Republican Party allegedly told voters they were signing a petition demanding tougher penalties for child molesters. Instead, according to the Los Angeles Times, they were unknowingly changing their voter registration to Republican. The change could prevent affected voters from receiving their own party's get-out-the-vote calls and literature.[1]
Firm accused of wrong-doing has a checkered past
Young Political Majors, or YPM, was hired by the California Republican Party and earns between $7 and $12 for each voter it registers for the party. The firm has come under fire in Florida, Massachusetts and Arizona for alleged trickery that may have resulted in unwitting voters changing their registration or signing on to ballot measures they did not support[1] In a separate incident, YPM's owner was arrested on Saturday, October 18, on charges of voter fraud. He said that the arrest is a political ploy by California's Democratic Secretary of State.[2]
