Gatto worked as a senior captain and paramedic with the Anchorage Fire Department from 1974-2000. He also worked as a high school teacher, college teacher, and engineer.
He was a member of Alaska Right to Life, National Right to Life, Palmer Chamber of Commerce, and Wasilla Chamber of Commerce.[3]

Personal
Gatto passed away after battling prostate cancer and ultimately suffering kidney failure.[12]
