Carlo Leone is a Democratic member of the Connecticut State Senate, representing District 27 since winning a special election on February 22, 2011.[1] Leone ran to fill the vacancy created after Andrew McDonald (D) resigned to serve as governor Dan Malloy's chief counsel.[2]

Leone was a Democratic member of the Connecticut House of Representatives, representing the 148th District from 2003 to 2011. He was the Deputy Majority Whip.

Leone served in the United States Air Force from 1981-1987, and was a Financial Analyst/Control Specialist with the Xerox Corporation. He is a member of the Figli di Rose (Sons of Rose) Italian Club, Stamford Citizen Patrol Program, and mentor with the New Canaan Horizon Program.[3]

Leone's 2011 special election campaign site emphasizes several key policy positions and campaign themes:

  • Community Investment & Public Safety: "Carlo has been involved in passing key legislation during his tenure, such as the $3.5 billion investment in the Transportation Improvement Initiative, legislation creating film tax credits allowing for the growth of the entertainment industry in Connecticut, the establishment of special taxing districts for municipalities to fund the cleanup of contaminated sites for the benefit of the community to foster smart growth and economic development, and also fire sprinkler legislation that was passed in response to the disastrous 2003 fires in Rhode Island and Hartford."
  • Veterans: "He also has been an active proponent of legislation supporting veterans, including the successful passage of a bill regarding free tuition for surviving members of veterans killed in action."
  • Commerce: "He is a former member of the Commerce Committee and the Energy & Technology Committee, and the valuable experience has enabled him to broaden his knowledge of the issues important to his constituents and state. In March 2003, he was appointed and continues to serve on the Communications Technology and Interstate Commerce Committee of the National Conference of State Legislators."

Leone ran in the 2012 election for Connecticut State Senate District 27. Leone ran unopposed in the Democratic primary on August 14, 2012. He defeated Barry Michelson (R) and Ronald Sala (G) in the general election on November 6, 2012. [4][5][6]

Leone defeated Bob Kolenberg (R) and Rolf Maurer (G) in the February 22, 2011 special election.[7]

2010

Leone ran for re-election to the 148th District seat in 2010. He defeated Phil Balestriere (R) in the November 2 general election.

2008

On November 4, 2008, Leone won re-election to the Connecticut House of Representatives from Connecticut's 148th District, defeating David Bedell (write-in). Leone received 5,686 votes in the election while Bedell received 8 votes.[8] Leone raised $5,694 for his campaign.[9]

The Yankee Institute, a pro-market think tank, releases its Voter Guide after each two-year legislative term. Each member of the Connecticut General Assembly receives a score from 0 to 10 based on how he or she voted in ten key votes. The Institute selects key votes which "reveal the differences between those legislators that would harness the power of individual liberty and the market to improve lives, and those that prefer a centrally-planned approach." A legislator with a 10 voted in agreement with the Yankee Institute on all 10 votes, while a legislator with a 0 voted against the Yankee Institute's views or was absent for all 10 votes.[10]

2012

Leone received a score of 0 on the Yankee Institute's Voter Guide for 2011-12, tied with 15 others for the lowest score among the 36 scored members of the Connecticut Senate. He did not receive a score for the 2009-10 term because he was not yet in the legislature.[10]
