Prior to joining the state senate, Liu was a member of the California State Assembly from 2000-2006. She was the mayor of the City of La Canada Flintridge from 1996-1999 and a member of the La Canada Flintridge City Council from 1992-1999.
Liu has a B.A. from San Jose State College. Her professional experience includes teaching at the Goldman School of Public Policy at UC-Berkeley. She was an administrator at Richmond Unified School District from 1978-1984 and a Junior High history teacher at Richmond Unified School District from 1964-1978.
Liu is running for re-election to District 25 in 2012 due to redistricting.

Legislative scorecard
Capitol Weekly, California's major weekly periodical covering the state legislature, publishes an annual legislative scorecard to pin down the political or ideological leanings of every member of the legislature based on how they voted on an assortment of bills in the most recent legislative session. The 2009 scores were based on votes on 19 bills, but did not include how legislators voted on the Proposition 1A (2009). On the scorecard, "100" is a perfect liberal score and "0" is a perfect conservative score. [1],[2]

Liu is running for re-election in the 2012 election for California State Senate District 25. She was displaced from her current district by redistricting. She is running against Ameenah Fuller (D) and Gilbert Gonzales (R) in the primary on June 5, 2012. The general election takes place on November 6, 2012. [10]

In 2008 Liu was elected to the California State Senate, District 21. She finished with 204,737 votes and was followed by Teddy Choi with 77,525 votes and Steve Myers with 23,482 votes.[11] Liu raised $566,723 for campaign fund.

21st district profile
California Senate District 21 is located entirely in Los Angeles County. The three primary cities in the district are Burbank, Glendale, and Pasadena. District 21 also includes the smaller cities of San Gabriel, Temple City, and La Cañada Flintridge, and most of East Pasadena and East San Gabriel (85% of each). San Fernando Valley neighborhoods in the 21st include parts of Universal City, Studio City, Van Nuys, Sherman Oaks, and Encino. North of downtown Los Angeles, the 21st includes Griffith Park, Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Echo Park, and Eagle Rock.[13]
