CARPINTERIA, California: A hearing is set for July 28, 2009 on a lawsuit filed by the City of Carpinteria to avoid having to produce a ballot title for a proposed Carpinteria Oil Drilling Initiative.

Peter Brown, Carpinteria's city attorney, is legally obligated to produce a ballot title that would allow supporters of the initiative to begin collecting signatures. However, he and the city have asked for relief from this obligation on the grounds that the proposed initiative is, in their view, "inconsistent with city guidelines, contains vague and false statements, and would circumvent the environmental review process."[1][2]

The proposed initiative would allow the installation of an oil drilling rig on the city's coastline.
