Delaware forest referendum supporters must work to get it on ballot

BURLINGTON, Delaware: Supporters of a referendum that would ask Town Meeting representatives and selectment to support selling a 250 acre portion of town-owned land must now work to get it placed on a 2010 ballot. The town board voted 3-2 on a motion against putting the referendum on the ballot. As a result, supporters must now collect 1,600 valid signatures from registered voters in town if they want the referendum on the ballot.[1]

The land, known as the Land-locked Forest, would be sold to the development group Patriot Partners, and would most likely be developed into a retirement community.

Delaware residents rally against alcohol referendum petition

DELAWARE CITY, Delaware: Delaware City residents gathered last Friday at the corner of East William and South Sandusky streets in front of city hall in response to Delaware city councilman Jim Moore’s circulation of a referendum petition that calls for the ban of alcohol to be sold or consumed on the city's streets during the annual August "Jeff's Jam" event. The controversy over whether or not to allow alcohol at the annual event is not new. In 2008, the city council approved the alcohol request after the presence of alcohol was called into question. This year, the council approved it on June 8. However, councilman Moore argues that the council should have permitted residents more time and opportunities to comment on the situation prior to the June 8th vote.[2]

In order to place the referendum on the November ballot, Moore must submit 1,124 qualifying signatures by July 8. However, should the signatures be approved, alcohol would be permitted at "Jeff's Jam" in light of the pending referendum.[3]
