Contents |
Staton was on the Executive Committee of the Bibb County Republican Party. He was also a candidate for the United States House of Representatives, Georgia, District 11, in 2002. He attended the Republican National Convention in 2000 and 2004. He then joined the Georgia State Senate in 2005, and has served in that position since.
Staton is the owner of Publishing and Broadcasting Companies. He has also worked as an Educator for both Mercer University and Brewton-Parker College. He is currently a Publisher and Broadcaster.
Staton earned his BA from Furman University. He went on to receive his PhD from Oxford University.

Staton ran in the 2012 election for Georgia State Senate District 18. Staton defeated Spencer Price in the Republican primary on July 31, 2012 and was unchallenged in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012. [2][3]

Ethics complaint filed by challenger
On July 25, 2012 challenger Spencer Price filed an ethics complaint against Staton.[4] According to a press release from his campaign, Price alleges that Staton participated in, and benefited from, a conspiracy to divert funds from the Georgia Republican Senatorial Trust to their campaigns.[4] Price also alleges that Staton received an in-kind donation in the form of campaign mailers from a political action committee also funded by the Georgia Republican Senate Caucus.[4]
