Cesar Perales (b. November 12, 1940) is the current Secretary of State for New York. He was nominated to this position by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) on March 31, 2011 and unanimously confirmed by the state Senate on June 7, 2011.[1] He replaced acting secretary Ruth Noemí Colón.

Perales, who also serves as a senior advisor for policy to the Governor, co-founded the Latino Justice Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund (Latino Justice PRLDEF), serving as its first Executive Director and later as its President and General Counsel.[2]

Among the many positions he has served in, Perales was appointed as Commissioner of the New York State Department of Social Service by then-Governor Mario Cuomo, Andrew Cuomo's father.[3]

Biography

Perales has spent the majority of his career as a public servant, including serving as Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services during the administration of President Jimmy Carter, as Commissioner of the New York State Department of Social Services under Governor Mario M. Cuomo, and as Deputy Mayor of New York City under Mayor David Dinkins. Perales is a co-founder of LatinoJustice PRLDEF.[4]
