Chad Griffin is the president of the Human Rights Campaign. He is the founder of the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which filed a federal lawsuit to overturn Proposition 8.[1]

Griffin is the founding partner of Griffin|Schake, a firm that provides political and communications consulting. He served as a consultant to California Proposition 87 in 2006, Proposition 10 (1998) and Proposition 71 (2004).

Griffin, who is gay, was tapped in October 2008 to try to turn around the ailing fortunes of the "No on Prop 8" campaign. The "no" side gained 8 points in polling in the last three weeks of the campaign but was unable to pull off a victory.[2]

According to his website press biography, Griffin is "a veteran of the Clinton White House communications team" and "the youngest staffer ever to serve in the West Wing."[3] Dee Dee Myers invited Griffin to work in the West Wing press office in 1993 when Griffin was 19. The only paying job Griffin had held previously was working at the Wal-Mart in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.[2]

In 1997, Griffin graduated from Georgetown's school of foreign service.[2]

Federal lawsuit

Griffin is the leading strategist behind the federal lawsuit filed against California Proposition 8 (2008). When the lawsuit was initially filed in May 2009, it drew "scorn and anger" from gay rights lawyers. These lawyers asked to join the federal lawsuit in late July 2009, and Griffin has rebuffed them, filing a strongly-worded brief with the court asking that they not be allowed to intervene.[4]

Rob Reiner, who is a key financial backer of the lawsuit, met Griffin when Griffin was working at the Clinton White House.[2]

The consulting firm Griffin|Schake has a client list that includes the Live Earth global concert series, the U.S. Green Building Council and the Make it Sustainable housing development in New Orleans, which is supported by Brad Pitt.[2]
