Lima earned her BA from the University of Rhode Island in 1975.

Lima is a Truant Officer and a Teacher for the Providence School Department.
Political experience
Lima joined the Rhode Island House of Representatives in 1993. She has served in that position since, representing the 14th District. In 1992, she served as Deputy Majority Whip. She currently serves as House Speaker Tempore.
