Charles Merriman (born December 17, 1958, in Cleveland, Ohio) was a former candidate for Vermont Secretary of State in the 2010 elections. On March 10, 2009, he announced his candidacy for the statewide office of secretary of state, the seat that was vacated by Democrat Deborah Markowitz, who ran for the Democratic nomination in the state's gubernatorial contest. Merriman lost the primary on August 24, 2010 to Jim Condos.[1]

Professional experience

Merriman currently works as an attorney in the Montpelier-based private practice law firm of Tarrant, Marks & Gilles. Prior to this, he had served as chairman of the Middlesex Zoning Board of Adjustment for thirteen years and nine years as an assistant attorney general. In addition to these roles, he also was the state's principal attorney on property tax issues and wrote the current version of the Property Tax Appeals Handbook.
