Markey won election to the Ninth Bristol seat in 2010. He defeated Raymond Medeiros and Robert Tavares, Jr. in the September 14 Democratic primary. He defeated Joe Michaud (R) and Russell Protentis (I) in the general election on November 2, 2010.[3]
