In addition to being a Senator, Rector is a small business owner. He and his wife are entrepreneurs, involved in retail business, wholesale art publishing and real estate management. He and his wife Betsy operated two retail art galleries in Camden and Portland for 20 years.
Rector graduated with his Bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of Maine-Portland in 1975. Rector also attended the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 2006 on a Brooks Fellowship.

Rector won re-election to the 22nd district seat in the November 2nd general election.[3] He had no primary opposition. Adrian Humphreys (D) withdrew from from the race, leaving Rector unopposed. The general election took place on November 2, 2010.[4]
