A citizen is a legal person who is a member of a political community, usually a republic or democracy.[1]

The term is used politically to designate a person with rights, obligations and privileges pertaining to the government under which the person is said to "belong," above and beyond the rights possessed (philosophically, sometimes legally) because of his or her common humanity.[2] A citizen is entitled to enjoy all the rights and obligations bestowed by the state in which he or she has citizenship. In return, the citizen must obey the state's laws and fulfill all duties to the state.[3]
